I’ve resisted the urge to "out" the specific venue I mentioned in my last post because this isn’t about one single ad. It’s about a systemic issue that is rife in so many industries, not least of all in the creative and wellness worlds. But let’s look at what that actually does to our industry long-term.

When you gatekeep entry-level roles by dressing them up as unpaid "opportunities", you are filtering out talent based on bank balances. It creates a cycle where only those with external financial support can afford to "break in." For everyone else, it’s a choice between burning out while working multiple jobs or simply being shut out entirely.

To be clear: I am a huge advocate for collaboration. 🤝

I’ve seen how powerful a fair trade can be. Whether it’s swapping skills with a peer or a "time-for-portfolio" arrangement, those agreements work when the benefit is mutual, transparent, and respectful of everyone's time.

But there is a distinct difference between a community exchange and a corporate cost-saving exercise.

I'm all about helping women reclaim their time and headspace, streamlining workflows and creating smooth client journeys so that they can focus their energy on the work they love and not all the heavy behind-the-scenes stuff. But you cannot build a truly soulful business if the systems behind the scenes are built on a foundation of uncompensated energy.

I’m all for community and creative exchange. I’ve traded my skills as a makeup artist countless times in exchange for portfolio shots, and I still love collaborating with people when the benefit is mutual.

But there is a line between a supportive trade and an exploitative one.

When we ask people to work for free in a commercial setting, we aren’t just saving on overheads. We are actively narrowing the field. We are saying that only those who can afford to work for nothing are welcome to be part of the "dream."

It turns wellness into an exclusive club rather than an inclusive community.

My mission with SH Virtu has always been to help women build businesses that are sustainable and authentic. To me, that means creating systems where everyone involved is valued. I’ve learned that how we treat the people supporting us is just as important as how we treat our clients.

I don't have all the answers, but this particular "work exchange" model doesn't sit right with me.

After 45 minutes of lying in the dark waiting for my 5-year-old to finally drift off, my brain is in no fit state for anything more taxing than watching something on Netflix or having a scroll.

I’m learning that having the evening to myself is a non-negotiable. It’s about keeping those boundaries! Even if my "head start" on the next day is actually just giving my mind a chance to switch off and do something "mindless".

- Avoiding "difficult" or tedious tasks to keep the peace elsewhere.
- Taking on extra work just to maintain harmony, even when your plate is already overflowing.

As a VA, I see this a lot.

You think you’re being helpful, but it’s not sustainable. It leads to a dysregulated nervous system, neglected client relationships, a loss of focus on the passion that started the business in the first place, and eventually burnout.

ChatGPT has become the "Hoover" or "Sellotape" of the AI world - it’s the name we all know and default to. But just because it’s the most famous doesn’t mean it’s the only (or the best) option for your business.

If you’re already running your business on Google Workspace, you’re likely already paying for Gemini Pro without even realising it.

I’ve recently moved my own processes over from ChatGPT to Gemini, and it’s been a total breath of fresh air. The responses feel a bit more "human" and intuitive, which makes it a brilliant partner for working through my ideas.

But a little word of caution: AI is here to do the legwork and save you time, not to replace your soul. Copying and pasting straight from any AI is a bit of a red flag - it’s usually quite obvious and can really put people off.

Your audience is here for your voice!

I use Gemini to get the ball rolling, but I always proofread, fact-check, and add that final human touch to make sure it aligns with my values.

So many amazing women sharing their businesses and stories, and a wonderful Fizziology session with Stephanie @fizziologyuk who had us all laughing our socks off!!

This was my first meeting and having dipped my toes into a couple of hardcore networking groups in the past, I was very apprehensive about attending.

I can honestly say this was completely different, in all the best ways!
It felt friendly and inclusive, low pressure and most of all fun!

Some days business as usual feels like a lie.

I’ll be honest, I am often guilty of "burying my head" to protect my peace. As an empath, I feel the weight of the world deeply. If I consume too much of what is happening in Gaza, Ukraine, or the current state of the US, it takes a severe toll on my mental health.

I know I’m not alone in that protective silence.

But there comes a point where the noise becomes too loud to ignore.

We are living in a time where we can see the truth with our own eyes. From every angle, through every phone lens, we see the reality of what is happening. Yet, we are met with official statements that present bare-faced lies as facts.

And while the headlines are filled with this orchestrated chaos, the terrorising and murder of innocent people in broad daylight, the incarceration of children, by a government agency, I cannot shake the fact that it feels like a massive distraction. A month has passed since the deadline for the release of the Epstein files, yet 99% remain buried.

As a human being my heart hurts and my head hurts.

I am not American, I don't live in America, and after this post I probably won't visit again for a few years! But I believe that to stay silent is to be compliant. We are being told to look away, to stop trusting our own senses, and to accept a version of reality that doesn't exist.

I'm speaking up today because authenticity in business means nothing if we aren't willing to be authentic about our humanity.

I am sad, I am outraged, and I am scared. Scared for my friends, relatives and colleagues who live in the US, and scared for what the future of this world looks like.

We are living in a time where we can see the truth with our own eyes. From every angle, through every phone lens, we see the reality of what is happening. Yet, we are met with official statements that present bare-faced lies as facts.

And while the headlines are filled with this orchestrated chaos, the terrorising and murder of innocent people in broad daylight, the incarceration of children, by a government agency, I cannot shake the fact that it feels like a massive distraction. A month has passed since the deadline for the release of the Epstein files, yet 99% remain buried.

As a human being my heart hurts and my head hurts.

I am not American, I don't live in America, and after this post I probably won't visit again for a few years! But I believe that to stay silent is to be compliant. We are being told to look away, to stop trusting our own senses, and to accept a version of reality that doesn't exist.

I'm speaking up today because authenticity in business means nothing if we aren't willing to be authentic about our humanity.

I am sad, I am outraged, and I am scared. Scared for my friends, relatives and colleagues who live in the US, and scared for what the future of this world looks like.

There’s so much invisible work that keeps everything standing.

The emails, the follow-ups, the planning, the small things that add up. Especially when the lines between work and life get fuzzy. It’s a lot to hold, even when you love what you do.

Today marks the winter solstice. The shortest day, the longest night, and a gentle reminder that rest is not something to earn.

Self-Employed? Consider this your gentle nudge… ✨

If you haven’t tackled your 24/25 tax return yet, this is your sign to get it DONE early - not in a late-night panic on 31st Jan. Go on, ask me how I know… 😅

When I first went self-employed, I was that smug person submitting my return in May. As soon as I got my P60 from my employed role I was off. But then as time went on other things happened, life got in the way, and suddenly I found myself joining the January scramble.

This year? I did it June 🎉

So, going forward we're doing things differently. Painless tax returns only. Future-you deserves that.

Here are a few things that help me stay on top of things:

▪️1. Log EVERYTHING as you go
Payments in, expenses out, receipts photographed - don’t trust the memory version of you. She will lie. Keep it simple and consistent.

▪️2. One business account = less chaos
One card, one account, one pot to track. No more hunting through emails for invoices or playing detective across five different places.

▪️3. Monthly money dates
30 minutes at the end of each month to check everything matches up. Stick on a podcast, grab a snack, and call it admin self-care.

▪️4. Use tools that do the heavy lifting
I’m still loving @freeagentapp linked to my @joinmettle account - it pulls everything in automatically, lets me send invoices, scan receipts, and saved me HOURS last year.

✨ Bonus tip: If you can file early, do it. You don’t have to pay until Jan, but you’ll know exactly what’s due and can plan for it like the organised queen you are.✨

Self-Employed? Consider this your gentle nudge… ✨

If you haven’t tackled your 24/25 tax return yet, this is your sign to get it DONE early - not in a late-night panic on 31st Jan. Go on, ask me how I know… 😅

When I first went self-employed, I was that smug person submitting my return in May. As soon as I got my P60 from my employed role I was off. But then as time went on other things happened, life got in the way, and suddenly I found myself joining the January scramble.

This year? I did it June 🎉

So, going forward we're doing things differently. Painless tax returns only. Future-you deserves that.

Here are a few things that help me stay on top of things:

▪️1. Log EVERYTHING as you go
Payments in, expenses out, receipts photographed - don’t trust the memory version of you. She will lie. Keep it simple and consistent.

▪️2. One business account = less chaos
One card, one account, one pot to track. No more hunting through emails for invoices or playing detective across five different places.

▪️3. Monthly money dates
30 minutes at the end of each month to check everything matches up. Stick on a podcast, grab a snack, and call it admin self-care.

▪️4. Use tools that do the heavy lifting
I’m still loving @freeagentapp linked to my @joinmettle account - it pulls everything in automatically, lets me send invoices, scan receipts, and saved me HOURS last year.

✨ Bonus tip: If you can file early, do it. You don’t have to pay until Jan, but you’ll know exactly what’s due and can plan for it like the organised queen you are.✨

You know the kind, when your mind feels like a browser with too many tabs open and you can’t quite find the one playing the music?! (Let’s not talk about the fact I have four or five browsers open on my laptop at all times, each with too many tabs, and sometimes genuinely can’t find where the music is coming from!)

The thoughts and ideas were flying, the focus was... non-existent, and for a while I just sat in that noise, flitting from one thing to another and getting nothing done.

I had to get outside, so I went and cut down my (very overdue) tomato plants and said goodbye to my dahlias in the garden. Then, when I came back in, I sorted through all the clothes my son has outgrown… but really, I needed to work.

Then I remembered the things that help: my headphones (binaural beats from @calm on repeat), a cup of @spacegoods mushroom and adaptogen blend, and permission to start small.

By 5pm, I’d sent 15 emails 🤯, outlined two workshops for ReKindle, and finally updated some website copy that’s been waiting patiently for weeks.
